Short-Term Clinical Internship Program ________

Each summer we open our clinic to midwife apprentices, interns and students from other schools and organizations (or independent individuals) who are seeking additional clinical experience. This program is ideal for those desiring to gain experience in a developing-world maternity clinic.

Now accepting applications for Summer 2012

We may make an exception if the program is full and accept special cases such as field missionaries needing training. You may contact us about your situation for consideration.

An intern's video is highlighted on our video link.

This is a Full Immersion Program

Upon arrival you will be integrated into one of our clinical teams. You will immediately be involved with every aspect of the clinic. Depending on your previous experience and knowledge of midwifery, you will be allowed to conduct your own prenatal exams and assist and/or handle births under the supervision of a qualified supervisor and midwife.

Generally, apprentices/interns work 5 shifts per week rotating between the birth room and prenatal activities. An average of 25-35 babies are born each week at the clinic so no one will be lacking for hands on experience. Opportunities are also available to participate in remote provincial outreaches to provide prenatal care to needy families, some of whom include tribal people.

Experience the Beauty and Culture of the Philippines

Experiencing the rich beauty of the Philippines is something each intern will have ample opportunity to enjoy. The beaches of Davao are breathtaking! Imagine crystal clear blue water snorkelling, sleeping overnight in native-style cottages on the beach where waiters attend to your every need. Many of our students have pursued their scuba diving certification that can be accomplished in only a few days time from PADI certified instructors.

  • Full payment required prior to arrival. Payment must be received by our Stateside office 30 days prior to arrival in Davao.
  • Interns must be willing to abide by the Policies and Honor Code of Newlife School as stated in this website.
  • Interns must be willing to appreciate the religious nature of what Newlife School represents and commit to honor the work being done at a Christian-based clinic without causing any dishonor to the school through their attitude, demeanor and social presentation.
  • Although food is included it does not mean that meals are prepared for you as an intern. Groceries are purchased and available for interns to prepare their own breakfast and lunch. Generally a commonly shared evening dinner is prepared by students and intern residents. Snacks and specialty foods such as imported items are not inclusive in the grocery budget. Interns may purchase their own personal groceries at their discretion and allowed to be kept in their residence. The school does not provide reimbursement for personal food items.
  • For interns applying who are over the age of 40; please be advised that you will be living in a dormitory with students and other interns as young as 19 years of age.
  • Applicants must understand the nature of their internship here in the Philippines recognizing it is entirely a cross cultural experience. Applicants should be fully willing to submit to the style of midwifery practiced in this country.
  • Interns must be willing to sign a Waiver and Release of Liability immediately upon arrival.
  • Interns must be willing to submit to the clinical expertise of the supervisors and preceptors working at the clinic.
  • Applicants need to realize their time here can be a very busy clinical experience, especially during days that multiple women are in labor. Flexibility and personal stamina are essential.
  • Please note that partipation in the mentioned outreaches is made available according to predetermined outreach schedules and is not necessarily guaranteed.
  • The director of the school reserves the right to deny privileges to any intern who might in any way violate the relational integrity of the school.
  • Fees do not include travel, visa and personal expenses.
  • Generally, interns are housed in the apartments located on the 3rd floor of our clinic or in our student dormitory.

Important Notation: A $500 non-refundable deposit is required upon acceptance to secure your place. The deposit fee is NOT refundable if you cancel. We consider this deposit as a 'promisory' commitment from the applicant that she fully intends to participate if accepted. Unfortunately some accepted interns have cancelled at the last minute which inadventantly prevents another serious applicant from being accepted who was denied due to lack of available space. The deposit will be applied to your initial $700 meaning you will be invoiced the $200 difference, respective to the first month's fee.

ADVISORY:
This program CAN BE VERY INTENSIVE due to the high number of births at our facility, and the hours required to work shift rotations.

Interested interns need to SERIOUSLY CONSIDER this program before applying.

Interns are not allowed to schedule their shifts and are fully expected to fulfill their shift dutiies as assigned by the school director, including night shifts.
