Davao City
Davao City is consistently ranked as the best city in the Philippines. Its population of 1.2 million people supports a growing economy and an expansive shopping district. There are five large malls where great deals can be found on everything from clothing to souvenirs. Following America's fascination for specialty coffee there are several coffee houses similar in concept to Starbucks or Coffee People. And, Davao City hosts an assortment of fast-food outlets such as McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Kenny Rogers Roasters, KFC, Dunkin Donuts, etc. Living in the Philippines presents new cultural experiences such as sampling delicious Filipino cuisine and there are dozens of restaurants that students enjoy visiting including a popular Thai food restaurant.
Davao is one of the top tourist destinations in the entire country. Some of the best fringe benefits of living in Davao are the beach resorts located along the coastal areas. Pearl Farm is a beautiful destination resort located only 45 minutes from downtown Davao. Students particularly enjoy day trips across the bay to Paradise Island Beach Resort. There they can soak in the sun, snorkel, enjoy great BBQ and even spend the night in a beach cottage. It is also possible for students to get certified in scuba diving.
For those who enjoy the smell of pine scented air there is beautiful Eden Nature Park and Malagos Garden Resort both of which are lush mountain resorts situated at the base of Mt. Apo, the highest mountain in the Philippines. There are also several gyms to choose from offering a wide range of activities if exercise is important to you. In addition, there are several nice swimming pools to lounge at during days off.
The American Embassy in Manila lists more than 130,000 Americans living in the Philippines. Presently, there are almost 100 missionary families living and working in Davao City. These missionaries represent almost every major large mission organization and denomination such as Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC), International Mission Board (Southern Baptists), Wycliff Bible Translators (SIL), SEND International, Assembly of God, New Tribes, Mennonite Central Committee, YWAM, Bible Baptists, Alliance, Calvary Chapel, OMF and the list goes on and on. Furthermore, Davao City is home to two private missionary schools serving children of missionary families one of which is the sister satellite campus of the well known Faith Academy based in Manila.
