Academic Program

Class sizes vary with an average of 15-20 students per year. These smaller class sizes have intentionally been developed to promote closeness and lasting friendships among the students and it allows for optimum learning in our school and clinic setting. It also enables us to better accommodate individual learning styles and differing speeds of learning according to each respective student.

Since academic and practical education are of equal importance, students spend a portion of their time completing the academic component while at the same time doing clinical rotations. The course curriculum meets the entire requirements set out by the National College of Midwifery. Assignments are researched and completed individually by each student. Then students gather with a midwifery instructor to discuss each completed assignment.

The first area of focus is normal pregnancy and birth. Then the student's research and learning broadens to cover complications of pregnancy and birth as well as emergency management. Due to the high volume patient load at our facility (Mercy Maternity Center) we are able to provide students with an excellent practicum experience coupled with their academic program. At the end of the program students will be fully prepared to take their final exam along with the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) midwifery board. Students may also qualify for individual state licensing and board exams.

Upon successful completion of the dual-enrollment program with the National College of Midwifery and Newlife Int'l School of Midwifery education program students qualify for the Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) status.
